A Pediatric Neurologist, Neuropsychologist & Surgeon (who also happens to be a Berkeley-Haas EMBA) walked into an NSF I-Corps National training cohort last winter.
Their tech for detecting epileptic seizures was sound and, at UCSF Children’s Hospital Oakland, they’re at the top of their professional games…what could they possibly learn?
A lot, it turns out. Seven weeks and 100+ customer discovery interviews later, the team found that although their passion and goal was to help the community, they hadn’t thought through the complexities of the business.
As founder Rachel Kuperman says, “In medicine, you’re taught to do an extensive search of the literature to find the answer. In I-Corps, you’re taught to ask questions, to ask people to find the answers.”
A week after the cohort wrapped, Rachel won first prize & $150k in the Epilepsy Foundation’s Shark Tank competition.
